The Township of Chatsworth “Edward McNabb Roofing” Bantam LL Rebels came out flying against the Mildmay Monarchs in Chatsworth this weekend scoring the first goal only 17 seconds in.
The Rebels worked hard in this hard-hitting fast paced game and several Rebels had their best games of the season. Evan Longland made a beautiful play from the opening face off to get straight down the ice and into the Monach end of the ice. Will Kavanagh scored the first goal of the game assisted by Longland and Kyle Fry and. A minute and a half later, Kavanagh, put another past the Monach goalie to give the Rebels a 2 goal lead. The surprised Monarchs came back hard and Rebel goalie Ethan Fennell made some excellent saves at the Rebels end of the ice. In the end, both teams had great chances, but neither could find the mesh. The battle continued in period 2 with more hard hitting and fast skating but the Monarchs were the first to score in the period to bring them back to within 1. The Rebels threw everything they had at the Monarch goalie, but nothing seemed to be able to get past him. The Monarchs evened the scored just past the mid-point of the period. This didn’t extinguish the Rebel fire though and Kavanagh scored again-- for the hat trick -- to give the Rebels the lead at 3-2 to carry into the 3rd. The third was a hard fought physical brawl and the refs decided to let the teams decide their own fate with only 2 penalties called in total for the entire game. With 1:50 left in the game, the Monarchs called a time out and pulled their goalie for a full press on to get the tying goal. The melee that ensued wasn’t for the faint of heart or the weak of mind/body. As the whistle blew with just over 20 seconds remaining in the game, the Rebels still held onto their 1 goal lead with the face of just outside their blue line. With 19.9 seconds remaining, the Monarchs evened the score and the game was send into overtime. Unfortunately, once again, overtime proved not to be the Rebels strong suit as the Monarchs snuck a creeper into the corner of the Rebel net during a huge pile up in front, to end the game 4-3 in favour of the Monarchs.
