With a 2 - 0 - 2 record in their O.W.H.A. Playdowns ... The 'Country Charm Mennonite Furniture' BANTAM C REBELS are heading to PROVINCIALS again this year.
Heading into tonight's game against the undefeated South Bruce Blades, the girls were told that they needed to win to qualify.
A WIN would have put them into 1st place in the standings,
BUT the top 2 teams from this division both qualify for the Provincial tournament ... and in this case
a TIE was all they needed to secure the 2nd spot!
(Consoling each other after the TIE ... BEFORE they were informed that they QUALIFIED.)
With incredible goal tending at both ends of the ice, it took a while, but the REBELS got on the board first with a nice high shot from
Kirsten Sutter, assisted by
Jade Gilchrist and
Morgan Moran at 3:41.
The Blades tied it up at 14:19 in the 2nd, and the play went back and forth for the next 10 minutes until
Joren Wilcox forced her way down the ice and got the pass to
Sammy DeJong. She was ready at the net (with her stick on the ice) to flip it up and over the goalie at 4:10.
Being back down to 3 defence this game, the girls were giving it their all, but got caught up midway through the 3rd and found themselves chasing the speedy Blades' offence down the ice with the puck. She managed to get the shot off just as we reached her and scored her 2nd of the game, high in our net ... to tie it up.
Both teams battled hard for the go-ahead-goal, but it never came.
Ashlynn Stephenson made amazing saves from start to finish and made this result possible.
Final score: 2 - 2
Grey-Bruce will be well represented at Provincials by these 2 teams.
CONGRATULATIONS REBELS and BLADES!!!!
