Don’t judge a book by its cover…
…And the hockey version of that age-old saying is: Don’t
judge a game by its score. That phrase
certainly applied to the Moggie Valley Timber Midget LL Rebels’ rematch game
against the Bruce Peninsula 1 team last night in Lions Head.
Make no mistake, the Rebels are in playoff mode, and they most certainly came to play. The first period was scoreless due to a flawless team effort from each and every Rebs player. The truth is, the boys wanted that puck, and the opponents were going to have to fight hard to get it. The second period was also close; two BrucePen goals and a beauty by Rebels’ captain, Matt Woodroffe, that found the top shelf on a tight-in shot from the short side, ended the period with a one-goal differential.
The opponents scored early in the third to pull ahead 3-1, but still the Rebels battled on. The tide was beginning to turn, with the good guys spending more and more time in the offensive zone, when the unthinkable happened. The Rebels goalie sustained an open ice hit around the seven-minute mark of the third that left him a bit shaken. The boys did their best to recover, but concern for their teammate took their heads out of game mode. The opponents scored four unanswered goals and the game ended with a score of 7-1.
Highlights of the night included some stellar goaltending by netminder, Andrew Stockwell, particularly the stick save that looked more like a baseball swing which denied an otherwise sure open-net goal, and a brilliant end-to-end rush by fiercely determined winger, Brody Elliot, that just narrowly missed the mark. The ping of the post could be heard all over the arena.
Boys, we are proud of your performance last night, and most importantly your positive attitude and gentlemanly game play. Great job!
