Two out of three ain’t bad…
After notching their first victory, the Moggie Valley Timber
Midget LL Rebels realized that, if they are going to boost their points in the
win column, they need to come to the arena with the perfect combination of (1) 110%
effort on offence and defence – from the first drop of the puck until the final
buzzer, (2) consistent goaltending, and (3) self-discipline that keeps their heads
in the game and their other ends out of the penalty box.
On Sunday afternoon, the Rebels opened the scoring when Jay Rourke pulled the trigger on a pass from Theodore Stockwell and Mason Hanna, blanking the Saugeen Shores Storm in the first period. The Rebels added two more in the second, one by assistant captain, Brodey Barwick (unassisted), and the other by Theodore Stockwell, who took a pass from Jay Rourke and put it home. There were penalties in both periods, but solid defence and good goaltending by goalie, Andrew Stockwell, kept the damage to a minimum, and at the second period flood, the good guys were leading 3-2.
With the refs clamping down on body contact, both teams landed in the box in the third. The Storm were able to capitalize on the man-advantages, but the Rebels were not, and the opponents scored three unanswered goals to take the lead. AP goalie, Devin Early, stepped in partway through the third and the Rebels were able to stem the flow of goals against, but could not find the net to effect a comeback. Final score: 5 to 3.
The good news is that the goals against are coming down while the goals for are going up. If the Rebels can keep cool and prevent those 5-on-3’s, the conditions will be ideal for the perfect storm of 110% player effort, consistent goaltending, and playing the entire game with all hands on deck that will surely deliver more victories. Go Rebels!
