Rebels D-men put on defensive clinic
When the TCDMHA Power Workers' Union Midget LL Rebels hosted the Shallow Lake Lakers in Markdale last Sunday, the stars of the show were the defence.  Putting on a textbook performance, the blueliners pulled out all the stops, keeping the opponents off the score board until the third period.

Three pairs made up the defensive crew that game, and they put on a clinic of the moves you would expect of pros.  Third year player, Jack Scott, with his go-go-Gadget-arm long reach, swept puck after puck off the sticks of opposing forwards.  On the boards, he took on not one, but two opponents, and way more often than not, came up with the puck.  Topping off his solid offering of the night was a beauty end-to-end rush.  Duncan Martin, also in his senior year, was the king of the poke check, the crowning example coming when he expertly broke up a two-on-one.  He unloaded some seriously hard slappers from the point, one in particular with so much power that astronauts are looking for the puck on the International Space Station.

Second-year blueliner Hunter Courtney brought his usual intensity to the rink, and his solid physical play reminded the Lakers that the home team is not to be messed with.  Some nice point shots, clearing plays, and two assists rounded out his strong contribution.  Rookie, Landon Heathers, whose consistent and dependable style of play is to get down to business and get the job done, had extra jet fuel in those skates this game, lighting up the rink with an awesome rush that got his teammates fired right up.  Rounding out the defensive squad was Jordan Longland, who ripped point shots, outskated his attackers, and faked out his opponents with his signature fancy footwork that on one occasion left his man with a blown tire on the ice trying to keep up with Jordan’s moves.

Helped out by backchecking forwards, the defence kept the opponents scoreless for two while Wes Houston put up the Rebels’ first point in the second period, assisted by Chris Hardman and Hunter Courtney.  In the third, the Lakers put in one, but the Rebels answered with a goal by Carson Torrie, also assisted by Chris Hardman and Hunter Courtney.  The Lakers managed to tie up the game a few minutes later.  The Rebels kept up their stalwart defence and pressure offence, but a missed tripping call took one of the Rebels’ defencemen out of the play and gave the Lakers the go-ahead opportunity which they capitalized on.  Despite their determination to tie up the game and regain the lead, the Rebels couldn’t pull out another goal before the final buzzer sounded.

The Rebels now head into a hockey-packed weekend, with a game in Markdale on Saturday morning and a tournament in Arthur on Sunday.  Go, Rebels, Go!
