Rebels and Ironmen Clash in Markdale
The Township of Chatsworth and District, Moggie Valley Timber Inc., Midget Rep Rebels put another W on the board Sunday when they handled the Wingham Ironmen 8 – 2.

The first period started slow for the Rebels.  Though there were some chances at both ends of the ice, the Ironmen quickly ramped up their physical play and it took most of the Rebels by surprise and put them off their game.  In the second period, many of the Rebels began to embrace the contact which led to a number of penalties on both sides and multi-point games for a host of Rebel players.

Mason Hanna made a great play at the Ironman blueline while a line change when on around him but then was spun off the puck which went within reach of Brandon Stewart, who made no mistake as he stepped in and blew it by the Wingham netminder.   Two minutes later, the Ironmen responded and snuck one into the Rebel net to tie the game at one all with 10 minutes left in the second.

Just past the midpoint of the second period, the Rebels once again took control during a power play with shots from everywhere.  Defenseman Jordan Beirnes fired towards the Wingham net, then Jake Moran corralled the puck and blasted a shot which the Ironmen goalie turned aside but Hanna pounced on the rebound and one-timed it by the goalie and into the mesh.  2 – 1 Rebels!

Less than 40 seconds later, Brandon Stewart and Austin King combined to assist Moran in scoring his own power play goal.  A minute later while playing 5 on 5 with players from both teams in the box, King tapped the puck ahead and Hanna once again fired a hard shot which the Wingham goalie handled but he could not control the rebound. Hunter Schultz chipped it towards the net where it squeezed under the goalie and made a very suspenseful slow slide to stop just over the goal line. 4 – 1 Rebels.

The Rebels finished off the second when, once again on the power play, Kinger scored a goal of his own as he contended with the punishing physical attacks at the front of the Ironmen net and  one-timed a beautiful pass from Schultz who made some notable moves and placed it on King’s stick from behind the net.

At the 10 minute mark of the third Stewart scored with assist to Moran and then Jay Rourke did it all on his own as he blew one by the Wingham goalie – 2 more powerplay goals.  Less than 20 seconds later brothers  Calvin and Brandon Stewart assisted Moran in scoring goal number 8 for the Rebels.  Later in the 3rd, Rebels seemed to relax and were caught napping as the Ironmen stormed the Rebel zone and blew one top corner.  Both teams continued to push and tempers escalated on occasion but the game ended 8 – 2 in favour of the Rebels.

Overall, the Rebels did well by remembering not to retaliate and to keep their tempers in check and their comments on officiating to themselves (something teenagers often struggle with).  Hopefully as we once again face this Ironmen team on Tuesday at 7 pm in Wingham for our first game of the silverstick, TCD will continue with more of the same for that game and through the weekend.

Go Rebels Go!!!
