Rebs post first point in doubleheader
The Howell Transport TCDMHA Midget LL Rebels jumped into the second week of the new season with both feet, playing two back-to-back games in two days against Saugeen Shores 2 this weekend and picking up their first point of the season.

The first game, in Port Elgin on Saturday evening, was a closely contested battle, with the Rebels striking paydirt first with a goal by Chris Hardman set up by Josh Currie.  Saugeen responded with two, and the first period ended with the Rebs behind by one.

The boys came out hard in the second, scoring three goals to Saugeen’s one.  Sharpshooters for the Rebels included Brodey Barwick, with assists from defencemen Jack Scott and Jordan Longland, Jake Hartman fed by Theodore Stockwell, and Chris Hardman assisted by Brodey Barwick and Garrett McNabb. Ahead by a goal, things were looking good for the Rebs heading into the third period.  With just over four minutes left to play, the Rebs netted the insurance marker with a goal by Josh Currie from linemate Chris Hardman.  All that was left to do was to run down the clock using the puck possession domination strategy that had put the team squarely on top.

Saugeen gambled, pulling their goalie, and with the extra attacker, managed to score one and then another, tying up the game with a little over a minute left to play.  Valiantly, the Rebels tried to regain the lead before the buzzer, but it was not meant to be, and the game ended in a 5-5 tie.

In the second game of the two-day series, this one at home on Sunday afternoon in Markdale, the Rebels opened the scoring with a goal by Garrett McNabb from Duncan Martin and Brodey Barwick.  Saugeen broke onto the scoreboard midway through the first, but the Rebels bounced back less than a minute later with a goal by Chris Hardman, again assisted by defenceman, Duncan Martin.   The Rebs finished out the first period with the lead.

Despite some close scoring chances, this would be the last time the Rebels would get on the board.  Saugeen scored three unanswered goals, two in the second and one in the third, to win 4-2. The Rebels have high hopes that, as they settle into the rhythm of a new season, win #1 is just around the corner.  Go, Rebels!
