Victorious At the Mount Forest Top Hat Tournament

Smiles filled the room after each game played today as the Hortons Concrete Finishing Novice LL2 team gave it all they had to go home with the feeling of being on top!
Well I think these coaches built a tournament team as they had great results in every tournament they entered this year!
A big thank you goes out to the person (who remains anonymous) that sponsored the team to play in this tournament. Both the players, coaches and parents had a great day.

First game at 9am was against Fergus. With most of the game played in the offensive end we almost feared a puck would not enter the back of the net as Fergus's Goaltender continued to make sick saves.
At the 2min mark of the 1st Fergus netted a goal.
Going into the second period down 1. Defense continued to be key. Cole Hall created many opportunities with his smart decision making and offensive edge. He was denied from pretty much every angle he attempted by Fergus's Mathew Law. Easton Croft and Dylan Harris worked great together in the back end to deny any chances in our end. Finally at 6:19 in the second Kody Cook was able to achieve what seemed to be the impossible by redirecting Finn McKee's shot from the point evening the score at ones.
Danny kept his net clean and after many more drives to the net by the Rebels in the third things still remained tied. Cook attempted another breakaway with a 1:20 left in the game. Head up looking at his target...this time winning the battle. The Rebels celebrated a big Win and looked towards their next opponent.
Cole Hall was awarded the MVP!!!!!!

After mini stick games and lunch the Rebels strapped on the skates and faced the Host Team Mount Forest. This game was back and forth the entire time keeping all the fans in it to the very last minute!!

I don't know what the secret breakfast mom served up today for Cook but it worked. Cook experiencing a record breaking day, finding the back of the net five times!! Only one goal was unassisted as the rebels really started to work together, took their time with the large ice and made great passing plays that gave Cook the opportunity to get to the net.

Trevor McCarthy had his best game of the season as he skated hard and controlled the puck creating some great passes to his line mate Cook which resulted in a couple assists. Cole Hall created many opportunities and was finally rewarded with a goal in the second period with a beauty high glove side.
Finn McKee and Conner Thede assisted on his goal. Hall ended up with a 4 point game collecting 3 assists along with his goal.
Our celebrations in the stands would be quieted as Mount Forest would respond with scoring as well. At the 1 min mark of the 3rd Mount Forest tied up the game 5-5. We thought that is what it would end up until Hall and J. McKee  worked to get the puck to Cook and he weaved his way in to Mount Forests end and scored with .58 seconds on the clock.
A big celebration ended up with Danny on the bottom of the pile. 6-5 Rebels win!
A well deserved MVP was awarded to Kody Cook:)

With a good squad left to play, we hoped the kids reserved enough gas in the tanks.
With Hanover 1-who is in the championship final of their playoffs and had beat both of their opponents thus far we knew this was going to be a tough battle.

Rebels came out strong, using the large ice surface to their advantage and showing great speed. 2min into the 1st period Trevor McCarthy continued to play smart and received a pass from Finn McKee which opened him up to skate in and make a great shot, surprising Hanover's goaltender as the puck flipped in behind him.
Rebels quickly learned of a player on the Hanover team as he weaved with great speed and puck control and shot high corner on Danny, three minutes later doing the same thing. The first ended 2-1 for Hanover

Before starting the second the coaches had a pep talk with the boys and I think it went something like this, go right at the kid with the red helmet, don't give him any room to skate or shoot! One thing I have learned at this age is that they love a challenge. The second period began and our defense kicked in. Sometimes taking 3 players to eliminate the opponent with the red helmet but it worked. Very few pucks made it to Danny and if they did he jumped on them. We had some great chances but this period remained scoreless.

The third was the same teeth clenching intensity. Our Rebels were playing the game of their season and a little irish luck set in as the puck was shot down the ice towards the Hanover goalie. Jhett McKee continued to follow it in. The goalie attempted to stop and cover up the puck but it snuck away from him and Jhett ended up being in the right place at the right time and shoveled the disc past the netminder tieing the game up. 6 minutes left in the game all the fans were in it until the buzzer sounded. Both teams ended with the same record and shared their victories. Jhett McKee was awarded the MVP  A little celebration in the dressing room with all the parents and players made it a great end to the day!! What an amazing way to wrap up the season.
