SUTTER scores in Double O.T. WIN in the FINALS
Kirsten Sutter scored the winning goal in Double Overtime as the COUNTRY CHARM MENNONITE FURNITURE Bantam 'C' REBELS defeated the top ranked Walkerton Capitals, in the Consolation Final of their WOAA Year End Tournament in Meaford.
The 1st and 2nd periods went end to end but remained scoreless as
Tatem Edwards had one of her best games of the season (so far ...) in net for the REBELS.
Aly (the flu can't keep me down) Airdrie scored in the first minute of the 3rd period on a beauty pass from
Erica McComb and
Lillian Harshman to her. Possibly referred to as "Tic-Tac-Toe"!
It looked like the girls had it wrapped up, until Walkerton took a time-out and 10 seconds later scored at 1:46 to tie it up...and they were onto O.T.
The 1st O.T. period came and went with neither team breaking the tie ... then after consulting the rule book, it was onto a 2nd O.T. period of 4 on 4. The girls started it with a 4 on 3 power-play, but couldn't capitalize on it.
With just over 2 minutes left
Erica moved the puck up the ice through traffic, got taken down (with no call) but still managed to get the pass to
Kirsten, who stick handled through
3 Capitals' players and took the shot, top corner and SCORED.
Game 1 on Saturday morning vs Georgian Shores ended in a 3 - 1 Win for the REBELS.
Grace Kivell opened the scoring midway through the 1st (assisted by
Kirsten), but the Lightning struck back with :15 left in the 2nd to tie it up.
Erica added a little insurance with just under 3 minutes left (assisted by
Grace and
Kirsten), and with :36 left
Kirsten got the puck up to
Grace who carried it right up to the empty net and carefully guided it in.
(Winning 2 periods and the game earned 4 points)
Game 2 on Saturday vs Saugeen Shores unfortunately didn't end the same way.
Hannah Mustard was fabulous in our net and the girls played a great game offensively and defensively against this tough 2nd place squad, but they just couldn't get the puck in the net. The final score was a very respectable 2 - 0.
(as both Storm goals were scored in the 2nd period, the REBELS earned 1 point for the 2 tied periods)
In an upset Saturday evening, 6th place - Georgian Shores beat 2nd place - Saugeen Shores to end our round-robin in a 3 way tie. It all came down to the points, and we snuck into 2nd place by 1 point to move on to the Consolation Final on Sunday.
In another upset that night, 5th place - West Grey beat 1st place - Walkerton to send Walkerton to the Consolation Final with us.
You never know what's going to happen!!!
Saugeen Shores and Walkerton will join the REBELS at the PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS in Toronto in April.
Our area will definitely be represented well with these 3 strong teams.
Good Luck Ladies.
We all wish Jess a speedy recovery and hope to see her back on the ice for Provincials.
